How intelligent you are? In one of these nine areas…

January 15, 2010

Intelligence comes from latin – intelligere which literally means: to understand

On start I’ll give you few facts from Scientific American Mind [November/December 2009] – more or less in quotation:

  • “1. Traditional iq testes miss some of the most important aspects of REAL-WORD intelligence. it is possible to test high in iQ yet to suffer from the logical-thought defect known as dysrationalia.”
  • the definition from wikipedia starts like that: “Dysrationalia is defined as the inability to think and behave rationally despite adequate intelligence.”. Another fact is that these tests are not designed for people with higher intelligence.

  • “2. One cause of dysrationalia is that people tend to be cognitive misers, meaning that they take the easy way out when trying to solve problems, often leading to solutions that are illogical and wrong.”
  • “3. another cause of dysrationalia is the mind-ware gap, which occurs when people lack the specific knowledge, rules and strategies needed to think rationally. “
  • “4. tests do exist that can measure dysrationalia, and they should be given more often to pick up the deficiencies that iQ tests miss.

Do you know that Einstein DID NOT SPEAK until he was four years old and DID NOT READ until he was 7? In the same time we all know how good he was at mathematics and physics!

That’s a fact! The topic says something like “these nine areas” and it’s because there is actually 9 different type of intelligence [according to Howard Gardner, a view from past years was: four and then seven so we can assume new ones have been discovered] – surprised? no worry – we’ll now go over all of them.

Naturalist Intelligence – this one is simply about ability to recognize and categorize elements of nature around us.

Musical Intelligence – it’s how good you hear/catch the rhythm and tone. This intelligence help us to “work” and reflect on music. If you ask me Bach was pretty intelligent musically… people who have this one on high level pretty often notice sounds that other people miss.

Visual-Spatial Intelligence
Spatial intelligence is simply being able to think and see in three dimensions [in their heads!] Simple… isn’t it? ;) Not for me, yet i still consider myself as an intelligent person! :D Architects, painters and pilots use these one pretty well.

Kinesthetical Intelligence
Some people are better in painting, some in dancing. This is the ability and moving skills. I guess you would like your dentist to have it at high level!

Mathematical-Logical Intelligence
This one consider building logical patterns, counting and relationships between different things (not neccessery people!). If you’re good at math or physic you may have this one on pretty high level.

Linguistic Intelligence
In my eyes it’s quite similar to musical one (catching the rhytm) but also give you possibility to learn i.e. accent of new language easily. If your child is good at learning non-native language you might suggest him/her to think about work as a translator [i'm not quite sure about this one if you consider development of computer translators... we will see in ten years] or simply propose joining another foreign language classes? Learning is extremely positive experience when knowledge goes in your head easily!

Emotional/Interpersonal Intelligence
Ability to not say “hey, cheer up! everything is/will be good” when someone just lost house, wife and job. If you’re FEEL that this will help the person but in this case it probably wouldn’t. It’s an ability to sense moods in which people are and respond according to what they feel/mean. Can we call it “understandment” ?

Intrapersonal Intelligence
Ok – and how you deal with yourself? You understand your feelings and emotions? think about them? This is an ability to understand yourself and direct your life in a way that won’t make you bad (with feelings, no some silly stuff).

Existential Intelligence
Well… have you ever thought a lot about why the hell we are on this planet? Do you believe in a soul? If so, where it come from and WHO is the god? Is there any? [I suggest you choose whichever you want - and tell me how emotionally intelligent was this comment ;]]  Existential intelligence lets you look for an answer to “what’s my mission in life?” question.

Summing up things: there are loads of different kinds of intelligences, there are loads of intelligent people who are considered as not intelligent because they’re not good at math or/and native language grammar. If someone will say to you that you’re stupid you can say “go with good/good to hell and ask at what you’re smartest”. Anyway – don’t let NO ONE limit you. We’re human beings… with super brain so just use it.

Soon:
- free tests for all the type of intelligences – from horizontal to vertical…! ;)
