Memorization Techniques – #2 Key words and links concept. Create your first memory table.

January 8, 2010

It’s a proven fact and we can test in ourselves. Memorizing something is a process of linking and associating and it widely depends on the way how we link and imagine the key words and key concepts. When something was a strong experience you remember it easily and it’s very ‘alive’. In a matter of a fact when you remind it to yourself you can say that you “live it through” again. When something was scary or joyful whenever you remind it you feel fear or joy and you smile to yourself. Knowing that we can make a use and create your first memory table! A special “place” in your mind on which you can simply put the things, it’s quite similar to mnemonic technique – the roman room you can find it in how to learn faster category. Generally we will create a table consisting of number and rhymed keywords adding to it one key word to remember!

Let’s start with ten words to rememeber: huge, lamp, shiny, basket, bicycle, ceiling, drama, tea-pot, alive, flower.

Now we create a table and associate the items with it:

1. One – Red Tram
Imagine red tram that gets bigger and bigger until it gets extremely huge and gets blocked between buildings!

2. Two – Master Woo
Now imagine Japanese old man with really, really long facial hair that stands on lamp with just one finger and still keeps the balance!

3. Three – Pissed Off Bee
Create an image of Bee that got really nervous, the faster she goes after the beer who tried to take the honey the more shiny it gets.

4. Four – Snowy Floor
Now the basket… img a basket that’s not only alive but also have great fun while sliding on snowy, icy floor and leaving quite deep scratches on it!

5. Five – Diver Dive
This one is quite simple… our diver is going inside the lake and taking out bikes from it! In a matter of a fact he took out already like twenty of them – see him putting out next one on the shore.

6. Six – Heavy Kicks
Ceiling is leaking, that’s why it deserve to be an object of your frustration – imagine yourself jumping like mad and giving it a heavy kick while performing salto! It can be so hard that the ceiling can break apart and you can have all the water on you!

7. Seven – Your new Heaven
Something new in heaven… a drama – see angels and devils performing play on stage and yourself throwing tomatoes at them!

8. Eight – Bus Is Late
Tea pot… bus is not arriving! You wait so long that you take a mini table, tea-pot and you decide that it’s tea-time! Remember to feel the taste of your favourite tea while you do!

9. Nine – Golden Mine
Just see the Golden Mine falling on some super hero and after second see a hand that breaks out from the ground and hear a very loud voice screaming “I’m Alive!!!”

10. Ten – Heavy Man
In this one we can use the power of contrast so imagine this great huge sumo fighter taking a very small flower and enjoying while watching it. You can even see him “swimming” in a pool full of this white small flowers!

Funny, dynamic, imaginative and probably a little bit mad? The more the better! Remember that first you need to create and remember the table with it’s positions – once this is in your head you just place elements on it. When you want to remember something new simply do a review of your table as you created in on the beginning and then place fresh stuff.

If you want to apply this for example in remembering history lesson
Simply read it once, read it again and this time get one key word from each paragraph and put it on table. This will help you remember material as it is in book or your notes and if you get prompted from answer you’ll be able to speak for good forty minutes!

Even if 10 elements table there’s nothing standing on your way to create your own 1000 elements table. If you’re to lazy change attitude as this will benefit you and if you don’t want simply come back in a couple of days as my next post will contain a fifty position mnemonic table with images!
