Improve your concentration… by eliminating 12 things that can ruin it!

January 10, 2010

There’s no need to speak… just go for it :)

  • Radio
  • Just do yourself a favour and switch it off when you learn. The instrumental music is cool, but radio was made to grab your attention and when you learn or perform anything else that requires from you a high concentration level it’ll simply make things harder!

  • Your tv
  • It’s worst… not only the sound but the vision! In addition it’s constructed to take your attention and keep it! There are some channels that are very good and creative at these tasks. If you want to learn, take the plug out. If you can not… at least leave the screen behind your back and put on headphones with good music.

  • Phone
  • If you just can… simply turn it off or tell people to not call between hour a and b unless it’s something of high importance. You can fully concentrate when you know that no one will disturb you.

  • Bad lighting
  • It’s a small factor yet very clear to see/notice. Use a proper lighting when you learn! Another thing is that if you don not have enough sunlight at day then you organism will have difficulties with producing melatonin – hormone of sleep and in effect it will give you problems next day… when you need to concentrate on exam!

  • Temperature
  • Quite funny but true… if it’s to hot you’ll get boiled. If it’s to cold you’ll think about tcup of hot tea each five minues. Make it average and leave an open window so your brain can be properly oxygenated.

  • Too comfortable sofa or wrong body position
  • Ok I know i maybe overdoing (really? i don’t think so!), but again… melatonin. If your back is not straight and your spinal cord goes nicely with line of sofa your organism will start to produce it and you will feel sleepy! The best position for learning is definitely sitting position, with back straight and feet hard / flat on the ground (it will give your subconscious boost if it’s about feeling sure so you will also learn better).

  • Party in the room
  • This is quite popular… especially in student’s academic life. There are some solutions for it and the best one is to learn before the party. If you can’t do nothing about it go out and find a nice places to learn! If everything is closed and you can not visit your girlfriend or go outside because it’s cold as on… arctic see [?!] then use headphones or just try to get the party people to learn (buahahahahaha!). No! Honestly the best thing is to go out and find a quite place – the corridor or basement can be cool. Or… if it’s your room you can send the party somewhere else.

  • Noise!
  • If you live by loud street you may want to close that window, put headphones or turn on the radio and set it for white noise – no station but that weird sounds. All other voices will disappear in it, but your mind will get use to and it wont bother you.

  • Posters
  • If you have a poster with a woman presenting her huuge blue eyes and you want to learn in front of it… well, i wish you good luck! Sure you say – you dont care about a poster on your wall, it’s because you got used to it, but that does not mean that your mind doesn’t notice it. If you already need to and can then place over your desk a poster or painting that will help you to concentrate and not the one that makes you think about going to tropical jungle.

  • A BAD place
  • Scary, isn’t it? Seriously – if you do not feel somewhere good your chances of concentrating properly on your task falls down dramatically so go out and find a best place for you. This solution have some serious pros because if you will find a one, sure place to learn then your mind will be setting itself in a right state whenever you start learning in there.

  • Mess around you
  • Organize your workspace. I’ve said it and I’ll repeat it again: remove empty cans, boxes from pizza and all the rubbish. Even if you’re leaving in a hive then make your desk clear, build walls from books and dress jumper with hood so you don’t see nothing else – just the material you want to learn and wall of wisdom!
