Speed Reading Tutorial

December 28, 2009

So you want to read faster? I think you don’t imagine how easy it is! This tutorial will give you some info about reading fast, where from it originated and what you can do to improve your speed today! Sounds good? Let’s start!

You may be surprised or no but there’s one simple fact – first experiments and trainings for speed-reading where performed by UK’s RAF [Royal Air Forces] simply to improve accuracy and targeting/shooting skills of their pilots. The technique was quite easy – display a movie with frames containing planes. The target was to catch the plane with enemy’s symbol and the training was to simply reduce amount of frames containing it. The outcomes was surprisingly good and the program was continued. So can you read faster? Of course you can. Why you should read faster? As I wrote in my first post – with so much informations around and such a speed of it the faster you can acquire it the better for you! Just imagine that you could learn twice faster or spend three times less on your school/study lecture so you can move onto tasks that give you more pleasure – i think this enough is a good reason. With time I’ll be updating this article with links to posts containing different practices and more information but for now let’s take one step to to improve your reading speed.

Speed Reading Tutorial
1. Choose one book, set some kind of alarm for 3 minutes [phone is perfect ;], mark the start page and start.
2. When you’re done mark where you’ve finished, count the words you’ve read and write down your score.
3. Take a grill stick (you know this long, thin piece of wood which you use for all this tasty stuff) and burn a little bit end of it so it’s black – if you don’t have one take a pencil or anything that you can use as a pointer.
4. Choose page, set alarm and start reading but this time go under the sentences with your pointer, if you’re ok with reading you can move it faster.
5. After you finish mark the place, count the words and write down the score.

As you’ll notice the second score will be from one to two hundreds higher than previous one and if you were reading with speed of 200 wpm [words per minute] then you might have even doubled your reading speed – that’s a trick! Hell… I like it and you? :D

Let’s dig deeper – i don’t know do you remember but probably in primary school you were using your finger to point under the words and read them, but your teacher was saying something like “this is bad, stop it and read without pointing!”. So now you know how your natural reading speed skill was limited at the moment when you were just starting to fly on wings of literature. We’re like Ikar who got his wings waxed by educational system. Sad but only till this moment because now you know how to get back on tracks!

Soon much more info and posts about this fascinating skill!
